Motivating Students To Learn

Posted on Sunday, October 3, 2010 in Travel

Much value can only be given to what is inside the plastic vials and bags by someone who has been intensively trained. For the scientists the samples taken from the Larsen Ice Shelf in Antarctica will fill their schedules for a long time. Multiple pieces of data can originate from mud, according to a college senior. A one month trip to Antarctica was funded by the National Science Foundation and the participants, including this college senior, belonged to the chosen university and college group. What these schools normally engage in are research trips of all kinds.

Punta Arenas Chile was the starting point for the group that traveled in early February on a research vessel. It was on the east of the Antarctic Peninsula, the Larsen Ice Shelf, where they first stopped and it was an unfamiliar place. Absolutely no one ever reached their destination before. The ocean’s depth was measured using sonar while the boat moved at a slow pace. Aside from gathering video footage, water and sediment samples were also gathered from the deck by students and researchers. These are samples which may take a long period of time to analyze.

By determining the makeup of the mud, how much water it holds, its composition, they’ll learn its history and how it relates to modern global warming. Students said the trip was the opportunity of a lifetime. Such a trip offers a face to face encounter with life, according to a student. A native of Scotland, she plans to study global warming in graduate school. Another student confirms that she wouldn’t mind being on a ship for the rest of her life, who will continue her studies next year at one university’s school of Oceanography.

Intense weather conditions in the Southern Hemisphere were overcome by these people. A close comparison was Upstate New York. Much more intense than the cold days was the sun that rose at 430 am and set at 930 pm. Having a really bright sun did not make it easy to look out the window. Science occurred 24 seven even if civilization was lacking over there. From midnight to noon or vice versa were the shifts given to the students. A group lounge was where students watched movies when they were not working, some slept on the bunk beds too.

But there was an unspoken rule among the student crew. Seniors should be alerted for any kind of serious activity. Other than go to a newly found surface volcano, a senior student needed to go to an emperor penguin as well. You don’t want to sleep at all, said the Dryden native. There is nothing you’d want to miss. She particularly loved it when they were brought to Vega Island. She said to stand where only 10 other people in the world have stood, to touch something, to be a part of that, it was unbelievable.

The duration of the trip is equal to five weeks of missed classes for the students. With their vessel having to deal with environmental hazards and the hectic schedules they kept schoolwork was not much of a priority during the trip. There is a bigger challenge when the ship is constantly moving. They were not able to contact the people back home as much. As a result of close quarters and having fewer distractions the students and faculty were actually brought together. For one student any escape effort was futile. Closeness is a matter of being in a wild area with an extreme environment.

They brought the mud and rocks they collected back to the United States in coolers, carrying documents to explain the unique cargo to customs officials. There was a student with five film rolls and 323 digital pictures. Another student, who went on the expedition last year as well, said she spent more time embracing her surroundings. Pictures are not the same, she said. You need to be aware of your surroundings.

A Quick And Easy Guide To Ibiza’s Restaurants

Posted on Saturday, November 14, 2009 in Business

It is more than likely that you are hitting Ibiza to soak up the party atmosphere, dance the night into morning, and spend some quality time topping up your bronzed tan. However, there is more to this island; no more so can this be found than in Ibiza’s restaurants.

There is plenty of variety for you to choose from; whether you wish to dine on Spanish classics, traditional Ibicenco dishes, Chinese, Italian and everything and anything in between. With such a wide range to choose from, you can dine in a different country for each night of your stay.

If you so desire, you can even spend a night or two tasting the food that the Netherlands has to offer. A popular destination for the Dutch, Ibiza’s restaurants are not simply limited to standard offerings you would expect to see anywhere.

The prices for food across the board is impressive, however, for truly great savings you need to head for the Spanish and local restaurants. At lunchtime, (anywhere from eleven to four most days), the “menu del dia”, will see three wonderfully presented courses, accompanied by a bottle of local wine, be yours for just about ten Euros!

You could of course elect to stay with what is offered through your resort. However, whilst these are generally of a high standard, it is outside of the resorts that the real gems can be seen. Try also to move away from the tourist traps; head into the hills and along the western coast for excellent service and quality.

Ibiza’s restaurants add so much more to your vacation than somewhere to eat but, if heading out in the summer, do be careful. More and more, lower quality, restaurants open up, and there are of course the global fast food chains. But steer away from these if you can, and follow where the local residents go the real Ibizan experience.
