Most people don't think twice when they put that old monitor or computer out for the garbage men to take. They erased their information off the hard drive. Isn't that enough? Unfortunately, the amount of e-waste that is landing in the country's landfills is staggering. Many programs currently in place make recycling computers easier for everyone, home users and businesses.

Computer technology changes faster than we can keep up. That coupled with the lower cost of computers means that we are replacing obsolete machines at an alarming rate. Why is it important to recycle? If not disposed of properly, computers can turn into toxins or carcinogens when left to rot in a dump. This causes materials such as lead and mercury, to seep into the soil and invade the water table.

Some components inside of the computer contain valuable resources that should not be left to sit in a garbage dump. These include tin, iron, and silicon, which can be reused after reclamation.

Consumers now have many options for disposing of their obsolete computers. One of the most common methods is donation to charity. Many charities are in need of computers to assist in their work. Typically, due to budget constraints, a proper computer is the last thing a charitable organization can afford. With your donated computer, these organizations, such as group homes, after school clubs, and senior citizen centers, can continue their programs.

Most consumers know little about the various take back programs offered by computer companies. These computer recycling programs are offered by most of the major companies, but vary from program to program. Some companies will take back their own brand of computers for free, but charge a small free for other brands. Others will only take back their own brand but will offer you discount on your next computer purchase as an incentive to buy their brand again.

Companies may also exchange your old computer for a new one. If the computer is still in good working condition, the manufacturer will refurbish the old machine and offer it for sale at a discounted rate. These typically come with some sort of warranty for the new owner. This program is helpful to those that may otherwise not be able to afford a computer.

Businesses have some of the same alternatives as consumers, but often they have bulk e-waste that doesn't lend itself to the usual disposal methods. Computer manufacturers may offer bulk recycling service, but tend not to include brand names other than their own. There are third party contractors that specialize in the proper removal and disposal of bulk e-waste. Regardless of what method a company uses, they must remember that they are responsible for complying and abiding by all rules and regulations, both federal and state.

With the number of methods available for the disposal of both consumer and bulk business computers, recycling is now a painless process. By doing a little bit of research to find out your local options, you will be doing your part to save the environment from its newest danger.

At low prices and with such convenient access, purchasing used computers Toronto is an economically viable option for those seeking quality technology. Another recommended alternative is renting computers, which allows users to conserve money and test the platform first-hand.

If you talked to a computer technician in the 1950s, you would hear stories about running from room to room, just to keep the processors cool. Today, the idea that a single computer could fill a room is a little hard to believe. Computers just keep getting smaller and smaller and at the same time get faster and faster. There is actually more computing power in a digital watch than there was in the entire United States in the 1950s. This is why, even though a mere ten years ago, the small and weak laptops were considered to be a frivolous way of computing that could never compete with desktop models. However, today, laptop computers are already outselling desktop computers in the United States. In worldwide sales, laptops look like they will outstrip desktops in the next five years.

In the first place, there is very little that a desktop can do that can't also be done by a laptop. All of the same parts are one both computers; they just look a little different. For instance, a laptop monitor rarely exceeds seventeen inches whereas a desktop monitor can now be measured in feet.

There is a sizeable monitor, but usually no more than seventeen inches. There is also a full keyboard. You will be hard pressed to find an ergonomic keyboard on a laptop however.

The interior of most laptops is comparable with desktops in terms of motherboard, memory, and video and audio cards. You might get a little more power in a desktop, but most people won't notice the difference.

Best of all, a laptop is portable. A desktop is technically portable, put it ends up taking up most of the backseat of your car if you do want to port it somewhere.

On top of all of this, a laptop is small and portable. You can fit it in your backpack or carry it on an airplane. All the necessary components are internal and fold up to something the size of a textbook. It is comparable in weight to a textbook as well. Why would anyone ever want to lug around a tower and monitor when they can just move a laptop?

You might even get separate speakers. Moving with one is difficult and there is no way that you would ever move your entire computer for an afternoon's presentation. Laptops can also run either on their batteries or on AC power. Therefore if you need to do some work but aren't near an outlet you can use your computer anywhere from two to five hours without needing to plug it in. While laptop batteries do wear down after a while, they will last at least three years with good use. Buying a new computer these days should mean that you are buying a laptop computer. Computers will keep getting smaller and smaller. Now laptops give you essentially the same computing processes but in a compact and carriable device.

A lot of Americans own computers. Of those that own computers, many of them own more than one and with good reason. Personal computer access can save you a lot of trouble when you need any amount of the incredible wealth of knowledge that the Internet and computer software makes available. It is almost becoming more popular to own a computer that can travel with you, and thus the popularity for laptops. If you or someone you know wants to get their feet wet with the portable aspect, you can start off with a cheap laptop and see how you like it.

When you are looking into getting a laptop, there are many things that you need to consider and all of these will inevitably affect the final cost of the product. These things include: size of the laptop, the hard drive, and its memory.

One of the first things you are likely to notice when you are shopping for laptops is the general size of a laptop that you would like to have. Getting a pretty decent idea of the size you would like is a very good place to begin. You see, the screens for these laptops can get as small as 8. 9" with clarity. The smaller the screen size, generally the cheaper the laptop; certainly there will be exceptions but these exceptions are generally conducive with higher amounts and capacities for the other two options.

The hard drive is quite simply how much your laptop can store at any given time. Lower end storage capacity is about 4-8 GB, but laptops have as much as a Terabyte (1,000 Gigabytes) of storage space. Granted, you can expect to pay a pretty penny for the convenience of having this much storage. As far as a cheap laptop, you should be looking more towards 8GB, and less towards the TB.

Memory is a crucial component of any computer, desktop or laptop. The memory indicates exactly what the computer can handle doing simultaneously at any given moment. The more memory, the more the computer is able to handle in terms of a workload. Low-end laptops are about 512MB - 1GB.

Getting a cheap laptop can be done as easily as searching for a good deal on Ebay. Other places that are safe to begin looking for great laptops that you can actually afford are www.newegg.com, www.buy.com, and there are always great deals to be found on Amazon.

If you know what you are looking for, getting a great laptop at an incredibly low price is not something of fantasy. You have to remember, the more you want the laptop to handle and do, the more it will inevitably cost.
