The discussion resulted in the basic concepts for Ikon which was to be a "gallery without walls". Angus Skene initially funded the project, which consisted of exhibitions in such diverse locations as cinemas and post offices in a motorcycle sidecar, the concept being to increase the accessibility of art to the public. To reduce overheads staffing was by the founding artists and family who gave their time freely. In 1965 the Ikon Gallery established itself in a glass walled stall in the infamous Bull Ring shopping centre.
