Posted on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 in Business
In this post on resume writing we are going to have a look at the work history part of a resume and provide great tips to make it impactful, keeping your job target in mind. The work expertise section of your resume should have this information, for each role held: Job title Name of the company City/Country Dates of employment Firm description (primarily if the organisation is not a well known name) Short explanation of your job duties Your important achievements/accomplishments It is best to avoid any useless data, like company address, contact particulars, names of supervisors and so on (Yes, I have come across these). An important thing to bear in mind is to focus enough on your achievements. There can be many people who've held similar positions and they all would have similar job duties. So a long list of your job duties won't set you apart. What is going to assist you to standout is information about how well you performed your tasks, or in other words - what were your accomplishments. A a thumb rule, I would suggest 3-5 bullet points (or a paragraph of 3-6 lines) to explain your job obligations and 3-5 bullet points offering details of your achievements. A great way to communicate your achievements is through Action-Benefit statements. Action-Benefit statements use your accomplishments and experience to reveal the positive affect you may have on an organisation's bottom line and to point out how well you fit the job requirements. An Action-Benefit assertion includes: Action: Specific steps that you took when confronted with a scenario, problem or opportunity that enabled you to attain a positive end result Benefit: The positive end result or benefit to the organisation, for example a rise in income, a reduction in costs, streamlined procedures or systems, or improved morale Begin your statements with Action Verbs (Managed, Spearheaded, Directed, Carried out, Executed, etc.) and attempt to quantify them whereever possible. Here is an illustration of an action-benefit statement - Conceptualised and implemented an innovative sales training programme which resulted in a 37% improvement in new customers.
