Have You Ever Tried a Cheap Weekend Getaway At Home?

Posted on Sunday, June 14, 2009 in Travel

by Tony Buel
Here's a novel idea that just may get the wheels turning in your head the next time you need to take a mini vacation. With money tight, there may not be a lot of money to use for traveling. Even so, with the weekend approaching, you think you need a change of 'scenery'. But have you ever thought about a weekend getaway in your local area, even around the home? Why not try to make a weekend - even this weekend - a no spend weekend where you do all kinds of fun things together without spending a dime! You may discover that this will be more fun than some of the more pricey weekends you and your family have taken recently. Here's are a few ideas to get you started. Completely put out of your mind the idea that you will lock yourself in the home and watch TV all weekend. You should probably reserve that for a weekend when everyone is feeling sick. Instead, try doing some enjoyable activities for a low cost fun-filled weekend. Investigate if your city offers any type of free activities for the public and go there. Some cities offer astronomy nights, free educational programs, park events, and more and it won't cost you an arm and a leg!Why not go swimming at the local pool? Here's an idea the kids will love - you could try to camp out in your backyard! If you have a local park that allows camping, this could be a great place to spend the weekend. You don't even need to be far from your home. You could do some site local seeing and take a historic home tour in your city. Spend some time research the oldest homes in the city through your local historical society. Public libraries are a great way to make this happen. Spending the day with your family playing a few sports in your backyard is always fun. If it's winter time you get out the old board games and play them as a family. Have a TV free day in which everyone gets to pick one thing to do as a family. Taking a week long vacation is a lot of fun, but it can be expensive. With a little creativity you can have several cheap weekend getaways instead of one of those longer stress filled family vacations. And you may find that doing it this way is a whole lot more fun!

Behind the Crystal Ball: A Look into a Psychic Reading

Posted on Sunday, June 14, 2009 in Entertainment

by Charlie Reese
In todays New Age world we live in, psychics have become very famous for their professed ability to read individuals and learn things about a persons personality without any foreknowledge of the person, all through the mystical and mysterious psychic abilities they claim to wield. This connection and insight is often revealed through a one-on-one psychic reading. There are many different types of psychic readings, but one that is particularly exciting is the art of psychometry. This article explains psychometry as a psychic reading and asks the age-old question: Does it work? The art of the psychic has made itself known on television extensively over the past few years. One popular example is the show Medium on NBC, which tells the story of a woman (played by Patricia Arquette) who has psychic visions that she uses to help people and solve crimes. Psychics also have talk shows that they use to offer advice to viewers, like with John Edward (of Crossing Over fame) and Sylvia Browne. Television offers a glimpse into the psychic world (both real and make-believe) for millions across the country, right into their living rooms. Another well popular TV show is Ghost Whisper. This is where a psychic helps the dead cross over to the other side by closing issues that are left in the real world. This is an extremely popular TV show that has been around for years! Many movies have been made over the years about psychic concepts. Perhaps one of the most dramatic examples is the movie Carrie based off a work by Stephen King in which the main character has the power of telekinesis (or the ability to move objects with the mind). Another wildly popular movie based off of psychic powers is The Sixth Sense, in which Haley Joel Osment plays a child who claims to be able to see dead people. There is no objective scientific study that has proven psychometry is real, but this does not stop thousands from practicing it worldwide. As with anything else, you will have to judge this psychic reading for yourself. However keep in mind that there have been many agencies around the world that have called upon a real professional psychic in aiding into investigations and have received amazing results by doing this. No matter what the medium, portrayals of psychic abilities in pop culture offer an insight into the world of imagination that reflects a human desire to know more about the world around us. Whether or not psychics are real and psychic powers really exist, their presence in pop culture is sure to entertain and inspire well into the 21st century. So the next time your wanting to watch something different on TV try watching one of these talked about shows or movies, you wont be disappointed!

A Brief History Of Del Mar California Horse Racing

Posted on Sunday, June 14, 2009 in Travel

by Terry Hunefeld
In 1937, a well known singer named Bing Crosby talked to some of his Hollywood friends about a dream he had to build a horse racing track in the quiet resort community of Del Mar California, just north of San Diego. His friends Jimmy Durante and Pat O'Brien shared Bing's dream and set out to help him build a great race track and where they could play the horses all day and the girls all night in the pleasant climate and cooling Pacific coast breezes of Del Mar. When the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and race track opened, Bing himself took tickets at the gate and welcomed race fans to what was to become one of the most famous race tracks in the United States, visited by race fans, horse owners and sports enthusiasts from all over the world. In August of 1938, the track hosted a $25,000 winner-take-all match race between Charles S. Howard's Seabiscuit and the Binglin Stable's colt, Ligaroti. This was an era when horse racing ranked second in popularity only to Major League Baseball. The race was front page sports section news in all the major newspapers was the first nationwide broadcast of a thoroughbred horse race by NBC radio. Seabiscuit won this important race by a nose before a record crowd and the Del Mar Race Track was "on the map" as one of the most famous race tracks in the world. The following years brought even more stars and celebrities to Del Mar and the race track: Red Skelton, Douglas Fairbanks, Lucy Ball, Desi Arnaz ("Lucy, you some 'splainin to do!") and Ava Gardner. The track was also frequented by Joe Frisco, a softly stuttering comic of the day, who would relate his success at "Bing's" racetrack thusly: "I came by the racetrack yesterday but it was closed, so I just sh-shoved the money under the front gate." After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Del Mar was closed for the duration of the war. The fairgrounds were initially used as a U.S. Marine training facility, then altered again and used to produce parts for the B-17 bombers that helped win the war. When the war ended, President Truman declared August 15, 1945 a national day of celebration. More than 20,300 horse racing fans showed up at the Del Mar track and bet an enormous (in those days) one million dollars. After the war, the Santa Fe Railroad offered a "racetrack special" to bring race fans from Los Angeles directly to Del Mar. The special program was a success, bringing streams of spectators, vacationers, race fans and horses to Del Mar. Waiting for and meeting the train at the train station became a tradition for local residents and vacationers alike. The 2009 season, 72 years after Bing took tickets on the first opening day, the race season begins on July 22, extending through September 9.

Power of the Forex Market To Make Money

Posted on Sunday, June 14, 2009 in Computers

by Frank M. Rivera
The forex market has been growing in popularity in recent years and it is now the largest financial market on the planet. There are millions of traders out there and trillions of dollars changing hands on the markets. While it is obviously a very popular market, what exactly makes it so great for investors? Let's look at the power of the forex market. The forex market is accessible; and it's accessible 24 hours a day, nearly six days a week, because it's global. While a broker is useful, they're often much more accessible than they are for stocks or bonds. They're automatable, with trading programs that can be run on your laptop to handle most of the routine swings. Lots of small investors use the power of the forex markets to work from home. Unlike a traditional stock exchange, the market doesn't actually take place in one location. You're trading online with a virtual trading platform. You put your order in and it goes to a trading desk at whatever broker you have. From there it goes directly into the market. The forex market can be traded anytime except for the weekends. It is open 24 hours a day for 5 days a week. Forex trading is all about changes in the price of a currency pair; these are denominated in ten thousandths of a unit of currency, and shifts of even one or two ten thousandths can result in large profits. Getting that small of a currency swing to turn into a profit requires leverage, where you're borrowing money to make the size of your bets larger. Leverage has its risks - just ask anyone who lost money in the last nine months on the financial markets. Used wisely, it's a sensible tool. Used poorly, it's like shaving with a chainsaw. Besides the ease of trading the forex market, you can realize huge gains in this form of trading. Unlike stocks where a stock raises based on an individual companies performance, these securities are rising and falling drastically at all times of the day. It is based on a lot of different factors and has a huge potential for profit. Forex traders can make a lot of money; most forex traders make a decent to fairly high income, but at a cost in personal time. The down side of this market being open 24 hours a day from London open to Hong Kong close is that you can't really afford to NOT pay attention to swings, especially if you're playing a volatility strategy on the markets. Strict money management is a critical skill, as is being able to absorb risks and losses and move on. Forex has a lot of strategies that can be used; the one most Internet marketers are trying to sell is some variant of day trading, promising automatic profits while you sleep through some top secret automated program. If such a program actually existed, there wouldn't be any forex traders left; it's still coming down to judgment calls and making good decisions. Other strategies are position trading - you buy currency and hold it for a long term trend, then sell it. You won't make as much money as quickly, but you're likelier to end up with a profit at the end of a month, and you'll have the freedom to get up and go to the bathroom without feeling like you're losing money. Overall, the power of the forex market is what makes it so appealing. Many have compared this to the gold rush in that it is a way for a common man to become immensely wealthy. Just make sure that you know what you're doing, or you'll lose all of your money in a flash. Be prepared to learn a lot and keep your lessons in mind when you trade. With this type of power, you can provide for you and your family for years to come.
