Tamborine Mountain, A Fun Place to Tour

About 20 kilometres inland from Bruce Highway is Tamborine Mountain. The route takes you through beautiful farming and gourmet food areas. You will then begin to climb up the steep mountain where you will discover heritage towns and National Parks. While traveling from Oxenford, along the Tamborine-Oxenford road, you will pass the Thomas Estate winery which also has a small museum and restaurant. A little further passed the winery you will come across the Nut Shed. This is a fully function Macadamia nut farm where you can purchase a variety of Macadamia and other nut based products. After an extremely steep climb you will arrive at the Mount Tamborine area. this area sits on a 600 metre high plateau on the northern spur of McPherson Range. Here you can see Queenslands first National Park, Witches Falls (1908), although only a small amount of the original forest remains and is broken into nine small parks. All the areas between the park sections are filled with heritage communities of Mount Tamborine, North Tamborine and Eagle Heights which were established in the late 19th century and are now made up if art and craft shops, B & Bs, wineries and Devonshire Tea houses. The tourists flock here by the busload so watch out for them and get a spot in a cafe quick before the bus unloads! Witches Falls National Park, southwest of North Tamborine and Cedar Creek Falls is one of the best spots to visit. Macrozamia Grove National Park is home to some of the oldest macrozamia palms. In North Tamborine, you will find a visitor centre, which has brochures on what to do and information on the ecology areas. There are also many wineries around the mountain which could lead to a very fun day. There is also the fabulous Tamborine Mountain Distillery, a boutique distiller which manufactures its own schnapps, liqueur and other spirits from organically grown fruit. Nearby is St. Bernards Hotel, a great place for meals, drink and relaxing. It is a rustic mountain pub with a large deck with a panoramic view of the gorge.

The Grizzly Bears Do It Again with Veckatimest

Grizzly Bear have never been about hype. Their last full-length album, Yellow House, seemed to virtually come out of nowhere to wide acclaim from fans and critics alike. Yet, even on the heels of what many people considered to be the best record of 2006, they toured very modestly, playing bars so small that they could barely fit their equipment through the door, while helping bring exposure to friends such as Dirty Projectors. They have then since became open acts for groups such as Feist and Radiohead. Even now, as the newest album Veckatimest is gaining much hype, they still remain humble as ever. This album is better then anyone ever expected it to be. Veckatimest, takes the lush components we loved from Yellow House and brings them to new heights. Vocal harmonies from songs like "Two Weeks" and "While You Wait For The Others" are reminiscent of Yellow House favorites "Knife" and "Easier". If you were a fan of the Yellow House orchestral sound then you will certainly enjoy Veckatimest. What has undoubtedly changed for Grizzly Bear on this record is their approach to song. Almost entirely gone are the meandering qualities from Yellow House, which are replaced with a pop sensibility that has only been hinted at in the past. Almost every track on Veckatimest is a stand-out, which is an awful lot to be said for a record, especially in an age where singles are the primary focus of the music industry. While each of these songs can certainly stand on their own, the record remains an incredibly cohesive unit, and is meant to be viewed as a solid piece of work to be listened to straight through, from beginning to end. Vary rarely is a band able to create an album where not a second of filler can be found, no matter how hard you look, and Veckatimest is indeed that record. The Grizzly Bears have maintained their position in the music industry as the most forward thinking modern rock acts. Although there is not much talk about their future plans, I am hoping it will not be another three year wait for their next album.
